Deepa Chopra Sharma & Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyalaya
Bhaatkhande Sangit
Vidyalaya was established by Deepa’s grandfather. Her father continued the
legacy by putting in immense hard work and dedication to bring the institute to
where it stands today. Deepa and her sisters, Pooja and Neetu, are the 3rd
generation taking forward this lineage and they consider themselves lucky to
have been blessed with the responsibility of this legacy.
Bhaatkhande Sangit
Vidyalaya was established in 1939 in Rangoon, Burma. After the second World War,
the institute found itself handicapped in its functioning. It left behind a
skeleton in Burma and made a fresh start in Delhi. The management rented out
premises in different schools to establish a firm footing. Finally in the 1980’s,
the Government allotted some land to the institute. But this was just the
beginning of the many challenges to come; primary being the fund raising
required to build the institute. After years of struggle and hardships, the
Institute today stands firmly as a beacon of music and dance.
Deepa talks about how
the challenges changed with time. One of the biggest issues is that classical arts
is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is often termed as not ‘cool’ and categorised
as ‘boring’. It is an art which takes time and patience to learn and the
results are not instant, unlike many other activities. In addition, being an
NGO, there is never sufficient money to make ends meet. The era of home tuitions
further complicates matters. Bhaatkhande prides itself on its quality and that
is something it refuses to compromise upon; often giving its competitors
offering activities at lower costs, a chance to edge in. Despite all of this,
the institute has gained in popularity and offers a range of learning to those
passionate about classical music.
Pt. Vishnu Narayan
Bhatkhande was a great musicologist. A university named Bhaatkhande University
was founded in Lucknow years back. Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyalaya was one of the
first few institutes that took affiliation of this University in 1939, started
by Deepa’s grandfather.
Apart from her
dedication to the institute, Deepa loves travelling, spending time with her
daughter and experimenting with something new often.
