Sushama Chitnis, Swedanika & Travel Pulse

Image
Sushama began her career by working in the travel industry for almost 15 years till 2015, when she began to feel the need to stop working for someone else and instead start working independently. Once she made up her mind, the next big question was which sector to venture into. There were three verticals that Sushama was keen on- travel, food and clothing. She believed each of these was an evergreen industry in India. However, there were challenges involved in each. Her prior knowledge in the travel sector made it relatively easier to start out with. In food she decided to opt for pickles and in clothing she began promoting Pathani sarees and hand painted kurtis and dupattas . The idea was that at least one of the three verticals would take off. The travel agency worked really well till the pandemic hit in 2020, grinding all travel to a halt. That was when Sushama decided she needed to focus on the other verticals. While pickles were a segment...

Pooja Nayak & Studio Ekah

Image
On completion of her Masters in Computer Applications, Pooja worked as a Consultant in an MNC for five years. Soon after, she shifted to Dubai where the opportunities in the IT industry were limited. Pooja did a few short stints in Digital Marketing but soon discovered that recruiters were showing a marked lack of interest in hiring a young woman with children. Pooja threw herself into becoming a full-time mom but as years passed by, she missed her financial independence and having a life outside of her home. Looking back, it was actually becoming a mom that pushed her to do something for herself. Majority of women are fond of Indian traditional jewellery. Pooja always had a keen interest in wedding and occasion wear jewellery styling. On one of her visits to India for a wedding, Pooja decided to do something about her interest in the field and reach out to manufacturers. The plan i...

Charu Arora & Dips n Chutneys by Charu

Image
Looking back, Charu gives her kids the credit for turning her into an entrepreneur. Watching her kids lick and finish up even the last bite of the dips that she made at home gave her immense pleasure. Whenever there was an occasion- get-togethers, birthdays, anniversaries, Charu found herself being lovingly coaxed to make dips; soon not just for family but also for extended family and friends! Soon the idea took root in her mind and she started the ball rolling! Being a history major, establishing a business came with a new set of changes. Charu prefers calling them changes rather than challenges since she believes that when one is naturally inclined towards doing something with vigour and passion, the challenges don’t seem i...

Garima Ahuja and It’s My Getaway

Image
It was when Garima booked a few holidays from various online portals and travel agents that she realised how very difficult it was to trust someone with an itinerary which was satisfactory in all aspects. The online companies ended up forgetting the customer once they received the complete payment! That was when Garima decided she needed to start organising holidays for travellers who didn’t want run-of-the-mill packages and were looking for a tailor-made itinerary; one which would provide 100% accountability and availability even after the payment was made. Garima always knew that she didn’t want to do a 9-5 job but wanted to be an entrepreneur. Life soon gave her the opportunity to start her own venture. She soon discovered that establishing the business was the simple part. The challenge was to convince people to change their way of travelling. Garima disliked it when people covered eight cities in 15-18 days. She wanted to encourage peopl...

Alka Kapur & Plantpure

Image
Alka was working full time till she had her son in 1991. She decided to take a sabbatical to be able to spend as much as possible with her baby. Alka always believed in natural products. She strongly felt that long term use of products containing chemicals could prove to be harmful in the long run. A chance meeting with a Japanese lady, selling combinations of henna, indigo and hibiscus oil in Japan to cover grey hair made Alka think. She tried the combination herself and was so pleased with the results that she decided to introduce this product to others. Alka also felt that there was a huge market in India for such natural products. She began researching various options for plant based, natural products. She followed this through with meticulously designing her packaging and thus was born Plantpure. Being a mompreneur was what Alka enjoyed the most; the work kept her busy and she had t...

Tanvi Singhal & Little Explorers by Tanvi

Tanvi began exploring DIY activities and sensory play when her son was 2.5 years old (he is 6.5 now). She started blogging on Instagram and lot of her mom friends asked her to start doing activities with their kids as well. So, Tanvi began taking sensory play classes for children. The classes became a big hit and Tanvi started posting on Instagram regularly. Soon, she began receiving requests from moms outside Delhi to send them the activities as well and that is how Tanvi came up with the idea of a sensory play box business. During the pandemic the business was a huge hit since almost all moms were looking at options to keep their children meaningfully engaged while they were stuck at home. Being a mompreneur was not something Tanvi consciously decided on but it came to her through this incredible journey. Her friends and other moms have been immensely supporting and encouraged her to pursue this line. Every time Tanvi gets an order for...

Deepti Bhartia & RePure

Image
Deepti was born in a business family, resulting in being exposed to business discussions throughout her growing up years; something which fascinated her from the beginning. Her first business experience was going to her father's office, supporting him and learning about the various nuances of business. The aspect of business which fascinated Deepti the most was public dealing. Marriage and motherhood took precedence and when her daughter started growing up, Deepti decided it was time to venture into a business again. A chance introduction to an American air filtration company, led to the starting of RePure. Deepti’s father-in-law suffered from bronchitis, and once he used their product for six months, he felt a remarkable improvement in his breathing. This spurred Deepti and her family to venture into this business; relatively new but with a solid product offering. Deepti took over the responsibility of retail ...
